Firefighters quickly douse house fire

ADAMS TWP — Firefighters this morning quickly put out a house fire caused by a space heater. No one was injured.

The fire inside a home at 420 Mars-Valencia Road started about 10:30 a.m. when a space heater had an electrical problem, said township Fire Chief Bill Hayes.

Some of the furnishings and interior walls of the house caught on fire, but responders quickly extinguished the blaze before it became worse. A woman was home at the time.

“The crews did a good job. They cut it off pretty fast,” Hayes said.

Fire officials called in a second alarm as a precaution since the area does not have fire hydrants. Firefighters had to use water from tanker trucks.

Township police officers blocked the intersections of Mars-Valencia Road, Route 228 and Babcock Boulevard while fire crews responded to the scene. The roads were reopened about 11:45 a.m.

In addition to the Adams Area Fire District, Middlesex Township, Callery, Cranberry Township, Wexford, Marshall Township, Harmony and Evans City volunteer fire departments all responded to the call.
