Pens' Bennett sidelined for 2 weeks

The second-period collision that forced Penguins winger Beau Bennett off the ice Monday night in Boston will keep him off the ice for at least a couple of weeks.

“Beau’s got a lower-body injury. He’ll be out for a couple of weeks,” coach Mike Johnston said Wednesday morning after Bennett underwent medical evaluations Tuesday.

Bennett, who missed 13 of the club’s first 20 games recovering from a knee injury in training camp, was just hitting his stride on the third line.

Jayson Megna will, for now, take Bennett’s spot alongside center Brandon Sutter. Megna was recalled Saturday from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

“I think starting in (Wilkes-Barre/Scranton) was really good for him to get his confidence,” Johnston said. “He carries his speed well. He gets in on the forecheck. He can make plays off the rush, and that’s something we’re looking for in that group.”

Megna, who led the club’s American Hockey League team with nine goals at the time of his recall, said the coaching staff has advised him to focus on what got him here.

“Just skating. Just play with my speed. It has to be a factor every night for me to be a factor,” Megna said. “Being intense on the forecheck and the backcheck. Hunting pucks, being responsible in the defensive zone. Those are the things I focus on down in Wilkes-Barre all year.

“It’s nothing new to me. I’ve just got to continue to do that here. Basically what makes me successful, I have to do.”

Johnston offered no other details about Bennett’s injury, and Bennett was not available.

Bennett’s 2013-14 season was cut short because of a major wrist injury.

Johnston said he reunited the Sidney Crosby-Patric Hornqvist combination on the top line because of how they complement each other.

“Sid plays a little more direct game. I thought Hornqvist can match him there, going to the net and playing that similar style of game,” Johnston said. “(Evgeni Malkin) is very creative, carries his speed well and makes plays off the rush. So we’re still looking for the right combinations of three guys. Certainly, I’ve come back to the Crosby and Hornqvist combination. I’m liking that.”

He pointed out how critical Hornqvist’s net presence is.

“A lot of guys will drive the net off the rush, but then they fan out, they go to other areas,” Johnston said. “It’s staying there, waiting for that puck to come back to that area and then really being good there. It’s a skill.”

The Penguins had an optional morning skate, and 14 skaters and two goalies participated. . Defenseman Robert Bortuzzo was a healthy scratch.
