Butler's Tukker Uniatowski wins the boys 200 meter individual medley during a meet against Indiana at Butler High School.

BUTLER TWP — Tukker Uniatowski wasted no time earning a spot at his third straight WPIAL Class AAA championship meet.

In Butler's first meet of the season Monday against Indiana, the Golden Tornado junior met the standard by winning the 200-yard individual medley (2:05.36) and 100 breaststroke (1:02.98).

Both times were well below the cutoff for WPIALs.

“His time in the breaststroke is awfully fast for this time of the year,” said Butler coach Dave Bocci. “He's implementing all the right mechanics that I want him to.”

Despite Uniatowski's effort, the Golden Tornado boys fell to the Indians 97-88 while Butler's girls suffered a 107-77 setback.

Uniatowski made the WPIAL meet as an individual the last two years and believes his time at the University of Pittsburgh's Trees Pool can only aid him this season.

“It was a great learning experience,” he said. “I learned a lot about myself and a lot about swimming.”

Despite it being very early in the season, Uniatowski has clear-cut personal goals for his junior campaign.

“I want to get my time down to 58.99 in the breaststroke and 1:58 in the IM,” he said.

Butler's other double-individual winner on the boys side was Joey Deemer, who won the 200 freestyle (1:57.78) and qualified for the WPIAL meet with a time of 57.66 in the butterfly.

Butler won nine of the 12 boys events, but problems with depth cost the Golden Tornado a team victory.

“That was the best lineup we could throw out there, but we came up just short,” Bocci said.

Also making WPIALs were Butler's Lev McCollough in diving, Nathan Callithen in the backstroke and the 200 medley relay team of Callithen, Uniatowski, Deemer and Max Merhaut.

Butler's effort in the girls' meet was highlighted by Jillian McElhaney's winning and WPIAL-qualifying times in the 50 freestyle (26.05) and backstroke (1:05.08).

Freshman Emma Weiss also made the district event with a winning time in the butterfly of 1:03.27.

“She's learning at the high school level now, but she's taking to it well,” said Bocci of Weiss.

Both Butler teams will be back in action Wednesday when they host Latrobe.
