Butler County's great daily newspaper

Her father's politics

When I learned another member of the Metcalfe family is running for elective office (“Rep.’s daughter joins GOP race,” Dec. 12, Page 1), my initial thought was, God help us.

I wonder if Butler County commissioner candidate Lisa Metcalfe shares the views of dear old Dad, powerful, longtime state Rep. Daryl Metcalfe, that:

• There is an “alien invasion” in our country.

• Gay men and women in the General Assembly are persona non grata, undeserving of the ability to speak lest they offend the Metcalfe Christian sensibilities.

• Individuals with a sexual orientation other than heterosexual deserve no protection from losing their jobs on that basis.

• It is appropriate to seek the melding of government and religion, in part through endorsing a “Year of the (Christian) Bible” and “Day of Prayer”.

• When someone voices a view that is contrary to hers, that she should talk over them and shout them down if necessary.

• Public transit is important to no constituent and undeserving of government funding.

• The Second Amendment is absolute.

I recognize that as a commissioner, Ms. Metcalfe would not have direct involvement in these issues, but there is the potential for her to use such a position as a springboard to higher office, perhaps someday to succeed her father in the General Assembly.

I also understand it is not fair to assume that she will be a carbon copy of her bitter, mean-spirited father. But the good people of Butler County should be concerned.
