Francis Smutney

Francis N. Smutney, 87, of Canonsburg passed away Sunday in his home, surrounded by his family.

He was born on March 3, 1927, in Pittsburgh, a son of the late Frank and Anna Kline Smutney.

Mr. Smutney attended Mars High School, where he set a WPIAL single-season football scoring record before being drafted to serve his country in the Army during World War II. He was later inducted into the Butler County Sports Hall of Fame for his football achievements. He attended the University of Pittsburgh and The Pennsylvania State University, where he played football.

Before his retirement, he worked as a chief chemist and technical director for Rubber Rolls Inc.

Mr. Smutney was a parishioner of the St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church, Canonsburg, where he was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed reading, sports, Steelers football and especially spending time with his family.

Surviving are his sons, Michael (Vicki) Smutney of Diamond Bar, Calif., Thomas (Barbara) Smutney of Canonsburg, Paul (Kristine) Smutney of Canonsburg and Patrick Smutney of Canonsburg; his two daughters, Mary Lou (Dan) Cunic of Canonsburg and Jeanne (Rich) Russo of Canonsburg; his sister, Leonilla Foster of Butler; his 12 grandchildren, Ryan (Lesley) Smutney, Leslie (Kris) Wagstaff, Christian (Mona) Cunic, Melissa (Shon) Worner, Jocelyn Cunic, Bradley (Kristen) Cunic, Abigail Smutney, Hayden Smutney, Megan Smutney, Emily Smutney, Nicholas Smutney and Matthew Smutney; his two great-grandchildren, Ava Worner and Charlotte Worner; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Smutney was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Agnes Prusnak Smutney, who died on Aug. 16, 2014, and his brother, Clifford Smutney.

Smutney — The friends of Francis N. Smutney, who passed away Sunday, Dec. 21, 2014, will be received from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday at theSollon Funeral Home, 30 E. College St., Canonsburg.Departing prayers will be at 9 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 9:30 a.m. in the St. Patrick Church, Canonsburg. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.In lieu of flowers, the family kindly suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society in Francis N.
