Planets gain ground

Mars takes 2-game lead in Section 1-AAA

ADAMS TWP — Sara Getsy and her teammates on the Mars girls basketball team don't want to do anymore sharing.

The Planets want to win the Section 1-AAA title outright after tying for it two of the past three seasons.

Mars took a big step toward its goal Friday night, building a 28-point lead by the third quarter in a 55-39 home section win over Ford City.

The win gave the Planets their fifth straight win and a season sweep over the Sabres (12-2, 6-2).

More importantly for Getsy, it gave Mars (12-2, 8-0) a two-game lead over Hampton and Ford City with six section games remaining.

“From the beginning, we wanted to be the sole winners,” Getsy said. “Last year we split and that was our main goal. We knew it was going to be tough, but we are trying our best and working hard.”

Mars coach Tony Howard could see the Planets hard work.

He felt it was the first time this season they built a comfortable lead.

“Against not as good opponents as Ford City we haven't been able to do that,” Howard said. “It's been kind of nerve-wracking so to speak. To get it out to that lead was nice.”

Mars was active on defense and held the Sabres to 9 percent (2-of-23) shooting to take a 28-11 halftime lead.

Getsy, who scored a game-high 17 points, scored the opening basket that sparked a 6-0 run to open the game. Getsy scored a game-high 17 points.

Ali Goetz added 15 points, eight rebounds and four assists for Mars, while Nicole McCloud added 15 points and five rebounds.

“We came out strong and that's the key for us,” Goetz said. “We need to come out strong and push the through the best and work as a team.”

Mars continue to attack in the third quarter, opening on a 12-3 run.

Two free throws by Goetz gave the Planets their biggest lead, 42-14, with 2:30 left in the third.

Christina Davis and Ford City did find its rhythm early in the fourth quarter. The Sabres opened on a 9-2 run, thanks to five points from Davis.

The early cushion Mars assembled kept the Planets comfortably in front.

Howard said he hasn't talked much with his team about what goals are for beyond the regular season.

The big goal for the Planets is to earn a 24th game by winning in the playoffs.

Goetz believes Mars is headed in the right direction after a win over Ford City.

“It shows we have potential to be on top,” Goetz said. “It gives us confidence in ourselves.”
