Butler County's great daily newspaper

To what avail?

After attending the Butler Township Commissioners meeting on Monday I have to ask why we have township commissioners. As the solicitor, Larry Lutz, stated in his summation before the vote on the Ritenour Lane apartment projects, the commissioners have no power to say no. If all the zoning regulations are met, then a planned building cannot be refused.

A property owner can sell to anyone for any development they want to. No matter if every person in the surrounding area says they do not want this development in their neighborhood, it matters not.

Seeing as the commissioners had no say in the matter, why was the sham of a public speaking period held? It could have saved the commissioners a lot of time that they could have spent on other township business.

The 100 or so residents wouldn’t have wasted a Monday evening for nothing.

The main point, though, is why have township commissioners if they are so powerless? Let’s just have a zoning board and be done with it.

Butler Township residents, let’s have a referendum and vote to do away with commissioners, since they are powerless to act and therefore deemed useless.
