Allderdice tops Raiders, 75-54

JACKSON TWP — It was supposed to be a challenge, but Victor Giannotta wasn't expecting 33-11.

That was the run Taylor Allderdice dropped on Giannotta's Seneca Valley team in the third quarter of Tuesday night's non-section boys basketball game at William Paul Gymnasium.

The Dragons shot a blistering 74 percent (14-of-19) from the field, forced seven turnovers in the period and cruised to a 75-54 victory.

“Allderdice is a terrific, cohesive unit,” Giannotta said, adding, “they are the best team we've played all year.”

The Raiders (11-5) overcame a rocky start to trail just 24-19 at halftime, but the third period began ominously with a Seneca Valley turnover and a Jim Jackson 3-pointer for the Dragons just 22 seconds in.

Moments later, Allderdice tallied six points in an 11-second span, helped by a pair of Raider miscues.

“We looked scared out there,” said Giannotta. “That third quarter was the beginning of the end.”

“Our press was really getting to them,” said Dragons' coach Buddy Valinsky. “We've got quick kids up front and big kids who can block shots on the back end. That's a good combination.”

Jackson led all scorers with 18 points. For the Raiders, Zach Snyder scored 11 points before Giannotta played reserves in the fourth period. Chris Hart added 10 points in the loss.

The Dragons (13-1) are a Class AAAA team from the City League, but the vast majority of their non-league games come against WPIAL competition.

The team's only loss to date was a Dec. 16 defeat to Hempfield, which is currently 14-1. The Dragons host undefeated Indiana tonight.

“They like beating WPIAL teams,” Giannotta said of the Dragons, “and we just got beat.”

“We have won the City League four of the last five years,” Valinsky said. “That gets you to the state playoffs and we always draw the second-place team from the WPIAL. The schedule we play prepares us for that.”
