NA tames Tornado

WEXFORD — Get dominated on the boards and it often turns into getting dominated on the scoreboard.

That was the story of Butler's first half Friday night against North Allegheny.

Over the first 16 minutes, the Golden Tornado managed just 13 rebounds compared to 26 for the Tigers.

It translated into a 16-point lead for NA, which rolled to a 52-28 home girls basketball victory.

For the game, the Tigers' edge in rebounds was 41-30.

“We haven't been getting out-rebounded a lot this year,” said Butler coach Dorothea Epps. “We just didn't have any legs tonight.”

That's because the Tornado had to play back-to-back games against staunch Section 3-AAAA competition.

They dropped a 61-43 decision to Pine-Richland Thursday before battling the Tigers.

Friday's game was rescheduled from earlier in the season.

“We basically came into this game with no preparation,” said Epps. “This is a defensive section we play in and teams just wear you down.”

Butler (6-12, 3-6) was on the short end of a 13-5 score at the start of the second quarter before pulling to within 15-11.

But the Tigers finished the period on a 13-1 run, the final three points coming on a trey from Abby Gonzales just before the halftime buzzer.

NA (14-2, 7-1) did not shoot well from the floor early on, making just 10 of its 30 attempts in the first half.

But its dominance on the boards kept Butler on the ropes.

“Rebounding was key for us,” said Tigers' coach Sherri McConnell, whose team has now won 10 straight games. “Defensively, we were able to do some things to bother them. It led to some transition offense.”

Julia Baxter led Butler's struggling offense with 10 points. The Tornado were 0-of-7 from 3-point range.

“You always need to open things up with some shots from the outside,” said Epps, “but it didn't happen tonight. That's not going to get it done.”

Taylor Lake (13) and Gonzales (12) both reached double figures in points for the Tigers.

Because of the rescheduled game, Butler will play the Tigers again on Monday, this time at the Tornado's gym.

“We'll take it easy in practice the next couple of days,” said Epps.
