Warriors win 3rd in row, 59-53

A 24-14 edge in the third quarter sparked Moniteau’s 59-53 boys basketball win at Union Wednesday night.

Cody Skiver scored 24 points to pace the Warriors (7-9), who won their third straight game. James Bair contributed 19 points.

Cole Morris dropped 22 points for the Golden Knights (8-8).

Girls Basketball

Stephanie McCall and Kristina DeMatteis both registered double-doubles as Moniteau crushed visiting Union 72-45.

DeMatteis had 19 points and 10 rebounds and McCall tallied 18 points, 10 rebounds and five assists.

Alycia Brehm added 12 points and Alazia Greaves 10 points for the Warriors (12-5).

Lexey Shick scored 22 points for Union (4-13).

Bowling

Matt Wetzel had a 665 series to lead Butler’s boys to a 6-1 win over Armstrong.

Wetzel began his second game with eight consecutive strikes before settling for a 254.

Dan Bellis also had a good night for the Golden Tornado (6-1) with a 624 series.

The Tornado girls dropped their second straight match with a 7-0 loss to Armstrong.

Megan Paul paced Butler (5-2) with a 613 series.

Wrestling

Butler’s Seth McCrea earned the Golden Tornado’s lone win with a pin in the heavyweight bout in a 65-6 loss to Franklin Regional in the WPIAL Class AAA team playoffs.

The defending state champion Panthers tallied seven pins.

“We knew we were up against a very good team,” said Butler coach Scott Stoner. “Franklin has several Division I recruits and it was like wrestling a college team. They were physical the whole time and kept coming at us full bore.”

Peters Township fell to 13-3-1 with the loss.

First Baptist Christian (girls) 49, Neighborhood Academy 27 — Hannah Roth scored 16 points and added 11 rebounds, seven steals and four assists for FBC (11-2, 8-0). Caitlyn Mueller scored 11 points, Lydia Roth had eight steals and five blocks, Katelyn Gavinski seven rebounds.

Neighborhood Academy 40, FBC (boys) 39 — Javier Iglesia had 20 points, seven assists and six steals for FBC while Aaron Drake had 14 points and Cameron Karnes eight rebounds.
