Getsy reaches 1,000 for Planets

Mars girls defeat Knoch, clinch section championship outright

ADAMS TWP — Sara Getsy was on a mission.

She just was really good at hiding it.

Needing 23 points to reach 1,000 in her career, the Mars senior guard was cool and calm during the first half of a section clash against rival Knoch.

There was even more pressure on Getsy: It was senior night and her final home game.

“I tried to not focus on it,” said Getsy, who scored 22 points in the first half and reached the milestone with a layup early in the third quarter as Mars rolled past Knoch, 65-28, Tuesday night. “We were really just worried about the win. That's all we cared about. Getting it was just a bonus.”

Getsy scored 10 points in the first quarter as the Planets stormed out to a 20-2 lead and poured in 12 more in the second quarter as Mars built a 41-18 advantage by the break.

It was then that Getsy realized she was going to reach her 1,000th career point on her home floor.

“It felt really good. It did,” Getsy said, smiling. “I really didn't want to think about it. I just wanted to focus on the game and if it happened it happened, but that was hard.”

After Getsy made the layup that put her at 1,001 career points, she was mobbed by her teammates as Mars coach Tony Howard called a quick timeout.

For Howard, it was special for him to see Getsy reach the milestone at home.

Ali Goetz, a senior forward for the Planets, scored her 1,000th point earlier in the season. She added 20 points in the win over Knoch.

“I'm ecstatic for her. She played great,” Howard said. “It was an unbelievable first half she had. The girls were aware of it. I knew she was going to get there, but it's always nice to do it at home. I think she had a nice, clear mind tonight and just played extremely well.

“Just the way she goes to work, goes to practice, does what she does in the offseason is impressive,” Howard added.

When Getsy became a full-time starter during her sophomore year, she never envisioned scoring 1,000 career points.

Even when the season began this year, she wondered if she would get there.

“It was in the back of my mind, but I never really focused on it,” Getsy said. “I just wanted to win and help the team and get back to the playoffs.”

Getsy helped Mars do considerably better than that so far this season.

The win over Knoch (7-14, 2-11) clinched the section title outright for the Planets (18-2, 13-0).

“These girls set their minds to it,” Howard said. “These seniors shared a couple of section titles and I think they really wanted to grab a hold of it and have one for themselves.”

Getsy said she has already begun to think about what it will be like when the season inevitably ends.

Hopefully, she said, not for awhile yet.

“It's going to be so weird,” Getsy said. “I don't even know how to describe it. It's just going to be so weird. Our seniors have played together since the fourth grade, so I'm probably going to start to cry when it happens.”
