Mars boys attain 20-victory level

Mars' John Castello jumps over Knoch's Mac Christy for a rebound in the Planets' boys basketball victory Tuesday night at Mars. The Planets remained unbeaten in section play.
Win over Knoch establishes new high

ADAMS TWP — Three minutes into its boys basketball game against rival Knoch, Mars had scored zero points.

Planets' coach Rob Carmody was not amused.

“I think that's the earliest I have called a time out in my coaching career,” Carmody said.

He launched into his team in the huddle, imploring them to “wake up.”

They did — in a big way.

Mars (20-1, 13-0) scored 47 points in the next 13 minutes to lead Knoch 47-22 at the half on the way to a 73-52 home section win.

It was the 20th win of the season for the Planets — the first time in school history they have reached that total.

It also clinched at least a share of the section title. Mars plays Hampton, which has only one section loss — to Mars — on the road Friday night.

Christian Schmitt sparked the Planets with 17 first-half points, including five 3-pointers.

John Castello and Robby Carmody added 16 points for Mars.

“Last Tuesday we came out and Highlands played harder than us and it was a great wake-up call,” coach Carmody said of the 61-60 win last week. “We wanted to make sure that didn't happen to us again.”

For Knoch (12-8, 8-5) all is not lost. A win at home against Freeport Friday would give it a third-place finish in the section.

Matt Zanella led the Knights with 14 points.

Jackson McKee added 13 points and PJ Gourley 12 for Knoch.

“I liked the way we started. I did,” said Knoch coach Ron McNabb. “I thought we hunkered down and guarded. And then they just went on one of their runs. I think our younger kids were a little shell-shocked and we warned them about that. We warned them that they were going to punch us in the mouth and we had to take that punch in the mouth and don't let it affect you. We let it affect us tonight.”

McNabb said he doesn't expect this loss to linger.

“Good things are really down the road, and I don't mean next year. I mean this year,” McNabb said. “Hopefully we got this out of our system. I believe we're a good team. I really think we'll come in to practice (today) and get right back after it.”
