Whitmer shot lifts SR in thriller, 36-34

Jenna Whitmer hit a pull-up jumper from the elbow with less than 10 seconds to play to give the Slippery Rock High girls basketball team a 36-34 road win over Grove City Wednesday night.

Whitmer scored 19 points for the Rockets, who started four sophomores and a freshman, against the Eagles.

“It’s unbelievable,” said Slippery Rock coach John Tabisz. “We played yesterday and we played a pretty good game (against Meadville). We scored 28 points in the first quarter and we were able to rest them. I only play six kids.”

Slippery Rock (11-7, 6-1) was down by 12 at one point to Grove City (11-6, 3-4) before beginning to chip away at the lead.

Grove City’s Alexis Deyarmin tied the score at 34-34 with less than 25 seconds to play before Whitmer’s game-winner.

Jordyn Wyllie led the Eagles with 12 points.

“It was a great atmosphere there (Wednesday),” Tabisz said. “I’m happy for them. It was another game that could have gone either way. Grove City played great.”
