Butler's Laughlin qualifies for state rifle event

Butler’s Rachel Laughlin placed highest among all females at the WPIAL rifle individual championship Thursday at the Dormont-Mt. Lebanon Sportmen’s Club in Canonsburg.

Laughlin qualified for states by shooting a 200-18x, tying for second place with Hempfield’s Mason Kemerer.

Kemerer won the tie break because he scored higher on a tie-breaking second target.

Girls basketball

Brenna Deyarmin scored 15 points and Alexis Deyarmin added 10, but Grove City dropped a home region game 48-40 to Oil City.

The Eagles are 12-8 overall and 4-6 in region play.

Hockey

Hempfield used three third-period goals to take down Freeport 5-2 in a Class A Tier 1 Eastern Conference matchup at the Belmont Ice Complex.

Michael Frazetta and Stone Haberstroh scored in the second period to give the Yellowjackets (11-8-1) a 2-1 lead. Jacob Bartus tied the game for the Spartans on a power-play goal with 4:02 left in the second period.

Ethan Grant scored the game-winning goal for Hempfield three minutes into the third period.

Matt Houston made 33 stops in net for Freeport, which was outshot 37-24.

Private schools

The First Baptist Christian School girls beat Seeds of Faith Christian School 64-12 to improve to 15-2 overall, 12-0 in league play.

Alexis Barnhart had a game-high 16 points and 12 rebounds. Hannah Roth (14 points) and Lydia Roth (12) each finished in double figures.

The FBCS boys beat the Slippery Rock Homeschoolers 61-54. Javier Iglesia had 25 points and seven assists, while Trevor Barnhart had 21 points, seven steals and six rebounds.

The FBCS junior varsity boys beat St. Fiedelis 49-39.

Aaron Drake had 28 point, seven rebounds and four steals. Nate Errington added 15 rebounds.
