Rue 21's Cranberry store opens

Innovative new concepts explored

CRANBERRY TWP — A young adult clothing store is trying an innovative new concept in its Cranberry Mall store, where grand opening activities were held Thursday.

The company’s headquarters is in the Thorn Hill Industrial Park in Warrendale, just south of Cranberry.

In addition to clothing, swimwear, shoes, jewelry, cosmetics, fragrances and accessories, Rue 21’s new Cranberry location offers the Rue Lounge, where shoppers can charge their cell phones, shop on an iPad for items not available in the store or just chill out.

Those who are unsure of how an outfit looks can put their smartphone into an adjustable holder sticking out of the wall near the dressing room mirrors to take a selfie. They can then post the photograph on social media or send it to friends and family for feedback on the outfit before buying.

The Rue Decor section offers pillows, wall hangings and other items used as decorations in shoppers’ homes.

The Cranberry location is one of 22 stores to feature a Rue Plus department, which offers plus-size clothing.

Dione O’Dell, Rue’s senior director of marketing, said Rue 21 now has 22 stores with Rue Plus, and plans to expand to 60 stores this year.

Summer Tissue of Penn Hills came to the Cranberry Rue 21’s grand opening to get a free backpack with coupons, gifts and random $21 gift cards for those first 100 customers.

She was anxious to experience the new Rue 21 concept that is not in her neighborhood store.

“I’m a big fan of Rue 21,” Tissue said. “I wanted to see the new store.”

She said Rue 21’s prices plus the ability to pick out an entire outfit from hat to shoes are her favorite features of the store.

“You can put some great outfits together,” Tissue said.

Julie Jesionowski of Seven Fields waited in the cold to enter the store after the 10 a.m. grand opening to get the neon yellow backpack for her 14-year-old daughter. She also planned to look around and maybe get an item or two for her daughter.

“I’m going to see what it’s like in there,” Jesionowski said.
