Rivals meeting in finals

One more time, Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic's girls basketball team has an opportunity to slay the dragon.

But it won't be easy.

The Trojanettes (20-5) take on Section 2 rival Vincentian Academy (24-1) for the WPIAL Class A championship at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Petersen Events Center.

“They're awfully good,” CWNC coach Molly Rottmann said. “The keys for us will be limiting them to one shot and being able to handle their pressure.

“Once they get going, Vincentian likes to play at a frenetic pace. We can't get caught up in that. Even when we break their press, we can't drive right in and score. That pace won't work for us.”

The Royals are looking for their fourth consecutive WPIAL Class A title. That streak began in 2012 with a 54-50 win over North Catholic in the championship game.

This is CWNC's first appearance in the finals since, the team bowing out in the semifinal and quarterfinal round the past two years.

Vincentian is 108-8 over the past four years. Two of those losses were two-point defeats (53-51 last year and 45-43 in 2011-12) to the Trojanettes.

“Our rivalry has a lot of history and we know each other well,” Vincentian coach Ron Moncrief said. “It adds to it, playing against a rival in a game like this, but our girls have stayed focus on the task at hand all year.”

That task has been becoming the first WPIAL Class A girls team to win four consecutive district titles. Only four girls programs overall — Penn Hills, Oakland Catholic, Aliquippa and Geibel — have ever won four straight WPIAL basketball crowns.

North Catholic won three successive Class AA titles from 1980-82 and three straight AAA crowns from 1993-95.

“We're trying to join an elite group,” Moncrief said. “God has blessed us by putting us in this position and now we have to finish the job.”

Vincentian enters the game on a 22-game win streak, including wins of 72-44 and 61-48 over CWNC.

Cranberry Township resident Brenna Wise has scored well over 2,000 points in her prep career. She collected her 1,000th rebound during a 20-point, 13-rebound effort in the Royals' 68-46 semifinal win over Quigley.

“They score a lot of their points on second, third, fourth, even fifth shots on a possession,” Rottmann said. “That team pounds the glass hard.

“We know Brenna is going to explode and drive to the basket. We just have to limit the second-chance opportunities, where she scores a lot of her points.”

Torrieonna Cash (19) and Maia Joiner (10) also reached double figures against Quigley. Junior forward Kiersten Elliott and junior guard Marissa Muth can score as well.

“We haven't seen many junk defenses on Brenna because our other girls on the floor can produce,” Moncrief said. “Brenna helps them out and they help Brenna out in that regard.”

The Trojanettes have their own standout player from Cranberry Township in sophomore center Sam Breen. She is averaging 22.6 points, 12.6 rebounds and three assists this season. She has 55 blocked shots, 51 steals and has hit 11 treys as well.

“Sam's been the key for us all year,” Rottmann said. “As Sam goes, we go, and that says a lot about a sophomore. That's not a pressure thing because Sam knows that.”

Freshman Mary Cassamassa is netting 11 points per game for CWNC while Abby Goetz averages 9.2 points and 4.2 rebounds per game. Evelyn Brazil leads the team with 15 treys and 10 different players have scored from beyond the arc for the Trojanettes.

Each of Vicentian's 24 wins this year have been by double digit margins. CWNC has won 11 of its last 12 games.
