Alexander Popichak

Sarver Scout earns Gold Award

Jenna Uric, 18, of Sarver was awarded the Girl Scout Gold Award with Troop 20474 of Freeport.

She is the daughter of Chuck and Cherrie Uric of Sarver.

Uric earned the award by building a green cathedral at Zion United Methodist Church. The cathedral includes four benches, a cross and a podium. It is also accessible from the trail and is open to the community.

Uric was a Girl Scout for 13 years and is now a lifelong member of the organization. She previously received the Bronze and Silver Awards for community service.

Uric graduated in Freeport High School’s Class of 2014 and is a freshman at the University of Mount Union in Alliance, Ohio.

Alexander Popichak, grandson of Bonnie and Gene Blair of Petrolia, has achieved the highest rank of the Boy Scouts of America by becoming an Eagle Scout.

The Troop 831 member is the son of Fr. Robert and Regina Popichak of Carnegie and is brother to Matthew.

Jon Burnett of KDKA emceed the ceremony on Jan. 24.

Popichak’s Eagle project was to rehabilitate the entryway sign to his high school, Carlynton Junior-Senior High School in Carnegie, completed with of the help of 35 volunteers contributing more than 120 hours of service.
