Boy, 16, killed in ATV crash

Driver suffers minor injuries

FAIRVIEW TWP — A 16-year-old boy was killed in an all-terrain vehicle accident late Friday night on Butternut Road near its intersection with Spruce Road.

Briggs R. Buck of Chicora died after the ATV he was a passenger on rolled over.

The accident occurred sometime between 10:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m., according to police reports. It was reported to 911 about 11:30 p.m.

State police Trooper Greg Bogan said another 16-year-old boy, who was not identified, was operating the ATV. Bogan said the driver had minor injuries.

Both teens were wearing helmets, Bogan said.

Butler County Coroner William Young pronounced Buck dead at the scene.

Bogan said the teens were going north on Butternut Road when the ATV started to slide sideways into the snow on the side of the road. The ATV rolled, throwing both Buck and the driver off the vehicle.

The accident shut down Butternut Road for many hours. Police investigated at the scene throughout the night and into Saturday morning.

Temperatures overnight dropped to 11 below zero in the county, according to the National Weather Service.

The Petrolia Volunteer Fire Department was at the scene. The fire chief could not be reached for comment Saturday morning.

Township Supervisor Thomas Knoll said early Saturday morning he had not heard about the accident.

“But we were just talking about how we haven’t had something like this in the Karns City School District in a long time,” he said.

Knoll said there is not a lot of traffic on Butternut Road.

The rural road’s intersection with Spruce Road is east of Karns City.

Linda Cairns, who lives near the intersection, said ATVs often travel on the roads in the area.

“Especially during the summer,” she said Saturday morning. “I can normally hear them going up and down the road.”

Cairns said she heard a loud commotion outside her home around the time of the accident, but she could not see much from her window other than lights.

“I just heard a lot of yelling,” she said. “We had no idea what was going on.”
