BUTLER TWP — A small fire occurred Friday morning at the AK Steel plant on Armco Drive. The fire was reported about 3:20 a.m.

Barry Racey, a spokesman for AK Steel, said the fire started on an anneal and pickle line where steel is treated and cleaned.

“A minor fire occurred early this morning at one of the operating units at our Butler Works,” Racey said in an e-mail Friday. “The fire was quickly extinguished. There was only minor damage, and there is no impact to operations.”

Racey added there were no injuries.

Firefighters from Butler Township Fire District 3, South Butler, Mercer Road and the city fire department were called to assist but were there for fewer than 30 minutes, according to 911 reports.
