Weather causes more mayhem

Road crews were able to clear much of the weekend’s snowfall from area roads by this morning, but it was ice that made getting to work this morning an adventure.

Cars were reported stuck on hills around the county, and in other cases vehicles slid off roads.

Snowfall over the weekend, up to 7 p.m. Sunday, ranged from an inch or two in Saxonburg and Evans City to four inches in Cranberry Township, Mars, Portersville and Sarver.

Those totals were somewhat higher by this morning.

A wintry mix is in store for Tuesday with snow and freezing rain in the morning, and in the afternoon, sleet and rain.

The weekend snowfall that added to earlier accumulations of snow caused a barn roof to collapse in Venango County.

A woman was rescued from the barn and taken to a hospital. A horse was killed, but several head of cattle and horses were freed from the collapse with assistance.

“It takes a lot of manpower in an incident like this,” said Chris Holmes, Pine Township Fire Chief. “It’s all hand work.”

The barn, which was totaled, likely would reportedly cost $75,000 to $100,000 to rebuild.

Firefighters from Clintonville, Pine Township and Grove City, along with the Mercer County Technical Rescue Team, responded to the scene on Gadsby Road, Irwin Township.

The snowfall caused some driving problems Sunday morning, including a car that went off Freeport Road and over a hillside in Buffalo Township.

Assistant Chief Mike George of the Sarver Volunteer Fire Company said both occupants of the vehicle had to be pulled up the steep hill in baskets tied to rope.

Although neither occupant complained of injuries, they were taken by Freeport EMS to Allegheny Valley Hospital in Natrona Heights to be checked out.

The accident was reported in a 12:30 a.m. 911 call. Crews cleared the scene at 3:07 a.m.

Other accidents reported Sunday included a vehicle hitting a stone wall along Sarver Road in Buffalo Township around 7:30 p.m. According to 911 reports, no one was transported to a hospital for treatment.

Another accident in which a vehicle hit a utility pole was reported at 8:39 p.m. No injuries were reported.

A little later, at 9:26 p.m., a 911 call reported an overturned vehicle on McFann Road in Middlesex Township. According to 911 records, no medical transport occurred.

Eagle staff writers Tom Victoria and Kate Malongowski contributed to this report.
