Newell takes 3rd in WPIAL for SV

Seneca Valley freshman 106-pounder Louis Newell battled all the way back through the consolation bracket at the WPIAL Class AAA wrestling championships Saturday to finish third and punch his ticket to the PIAA wrestling championships, which begin Thursday in Hershey.

Newell won four matches on Saturday, including a 5-4 decision over Logan Macri of Canon-McMillan in the consolation final.

Newell is now 31-6 this season and will face Jordan Harsh of Penn Manor in a pigtail round at the state tournament.

Cranberry Township resident and Pittsburgh Central Catholic 160-pounder Tony Palumbo also finished third and advanced to the state tournament.

He took a similar road as Newell, winning four matches on Saturday, including a 3-2 consolation final win over Brendan Burnham of Pine-Richland.
