Student council conference slated

Mars High School will host event

ADAMS TWP — The Mars High School student council on Friday will host the Pennsylvania Association of Student Councils Region A Spring Conference.

The event is expected to attract about 330 students from 19 schools.

Kelly O’Connell and Jimmy Pierre, who are juniors and student council members at Mars as well as co-chairmen of the conference committee, said they have been planning the event since the start of the school year.

“We’re pretty prepared,” said Jimmy. “We’ve been working on it for a while now.”

Kelly said the conference theme is “Go Wild for Student Council,” with the “wild” being an acronym for “we initiate leadership development.”

“We are inspiring kids to take leadership back to their student councils,” Kelly said.

Jessica Narwold, the Mars student council adviser, said the keynote speaker will be Mike Smith, founder and executive director of Skate for Change. The nonprofit movement empowers skateboarders to give back to the homeless in their communities.

Other activities will include the building of catfish spawning boxes to be placed in Glade Run Lake when it is restored, and performances by the Mars Stars Jump Rope Team and the Mars High band and chorus.

The students and advisers from around the region will break up into workshops with titles like “Inflating Your Self-Confidence,” “Unifying Your School” and “How to Make Your Council Awesome: A Four Step Guide.”

Narwold is confident the conference will achieve its goal.

“It will give the opportunity to area students to develop their leadership skills,” Narwold said.
