Bald eagles expect pair of hatchlings

PITTSBURGH — The bald eagles nesting along the Monongahela River in the Hays neighborhood of Pittsburgh are expecting a pair of hatchlings this month.

The first of the eagles’ two eggs was laid Feb. 17 while another followed Feb. 20.

A video live-stream of the nest is available online courtesy of the Murrysville-based PixController, which is working with the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania.

Bill Powers, president of PixController, said the expected hatch dates for the eggs are March 24 and March 27.

Last year the parenting eagles hatched three eggs.

“As far as we know they survived,” Powers said of the new generation of eagles. “They were healthy when they fledged.”

Powers said it is impossible to know where the fledglings went.

The births of the eagles a year ago caught widespread attention across Western Pennsylvania due to a camera surveying the nest around the clock.

Last year the nest had 3.2 million unique views, Powers said.

The camera will remain on the nest until about August, when the eagles leave.

Powers said a bike trail runs about 150 yards away from the nest, allowing people to get a look at the eagles in person as well.

This is the third year the parenting eagles have been in the Hays neighborhood.

“And it’s the second year in this nest,” Powers said, adding the first nest the eagles built blew over in a summer storm.
