Build a marathon body

Kyle Garner is a cyclist, as his phone message announces. He’s also a runner — a good runner.

He’s in the midst of training for the 2015 Boston Marathon after posting a 3:26 in last year’s historic race.

Kyle knows how to train year round in all conditions and he’s here to help you with your spring training. His three-event PREP4PITT series in Mercer County is a distance progression designed to, as Kyle says, “build a better body for the marathon.”

The three events in PREP4PITT add up to the true marathon distance of 26 miles, 385 yards. Garner purposely avoids the 5K racing distance for his events, feeling that there are entirely too many 5Ks on the calendar already.

Because spring marathon training begins in the dead of winter, Garner holds his first event of the series in what is usually adverse conditions. Trout Island Tromp, held this year on Feb. 14, is an out-and-back 4.6 mile run showcasing the Trout Island Trail. Trout Island is the first trail completed by the Mercer County Trail Association.

With the snow and frigid temperatures, Kyle says it was actually good preparation for a marathon.

“In the last miles of a marathon, anything can happen,” he says. “You have to learn how to endure and overcome, to adjust to conditions.”

If you missed this year’s Trout Island Tromp, it’s not too late to complete the other events in Kyle Garner’s training plan. Spring Break 8(.5) on March 14, 9 a.m., is an opportunity for runners to, as Garner says, “ramp up distance and run harder for longer.”

Spring Break 8(.5) starts at Fredonia Presbyterian Church in the small town of Fredonia. The course runs out-and-back on a rural and rolling country road.

Garner says the course is a “tutorial on learning to judge pace.” The beginning and ending miles are relatively flat, offering runners a good assessment of marathon (or half marathon) race pace. The more challenging middle miles give participants a test of fitness and a sense of running effort.

Spring Break 8(.5) is, in Kyle’s words, “good training at a moderate price.” There are no commemorative t-shirts and awards for overall top finishers only. Runners are encouraged to sign up on the day of the event.

For their $20 entry, proceeds benefitting Mercer County Trail Association, participants enjoy a challenging timed course with two water stops, the company of other runners and the warmth of the Presbyterian Church as a staging area.

The final event in PREP4PITT is PREP4PITT Half Marathon and 5K, April 4 at Maurice Goddard State Park in Sandy Lake. The half marathon is a gentle scenic run around Lake Wilhelm on the park’s paved recreational trail while the 5K runs out and back on the same trail.

Kyle says that by April, runners should be at a point in their training to dial in their race pace with a steady, level run. He’s also hoping for a spring heat wave since it can be difficult to train in the cold all winter, then run a hot spring race. It’s all part of preparation for the marathon.

Garner will be running the PREP4PITT Half Marathon course a week early since he’ll have plenty to do on race day. Although he’s training for Boston, he says that this may be his last marathon for a while.

He prefers weekly runs of 90 minutes to two hours on dirt roads or undeveloped rail trails.
