Tornado bowler wins title

White wins regional crown as 3rd seed

NORTH VERSAILLES — MiKayla White found her happy place by chance on the ride to North Versailles Bowl Friday afternoon before the WPIBL Bowling Regional Championships.

White heard Andy Grammer's “Honey, I'm Good” and had something to hum while looking for focus.

Everything was in tune for the Butler senior, who bested Penn-Trafford's Amanda Balas 189-174 in the finals to win her first regional title and clinch a second bid to the state tournament.

“I think it helped me tremendously,” White said about her mental approach. “I was able to keep myself calm and focus on what I was doing in that particular moment and not worry about what may happen later on.”

White gave the Golden Tornado its second straight individual regional crown.

Top-seeded Megan Paul — who lost by one pin, 149-148, to Balas in the semifinals and finished fourth — won last season.

“MiKayla made the top four last year,” Butler bowling coach Bob Cupp said. “She used that experience and I was amazed by her ability to stay calm. Every time the adrenaline started to flow, she took her time and picked up spares.”

Paul and Nicole Nebel, who finished seventh, also qualified for the state tournament, which will be held next Friday at Ephrata.

Nebel was seeded 12th in the ladder-matches and beat fifth-seeded Kyra Shrum of Greensburg Salem 170-142 before losing to Balas.

Paul won her first-round match 203-191 over Plum's Sarah Kirkpatrick.

White, who was seeded third, beat Hempfield's Ashton Altman (203-174) and Plum's Meghan Christman (168-150) on the way to the finals.

“Every time she had a critical shot, MiKayla was able to make it,” Golden Tornado bowling coach Bob Cupp said. “It was a difficult shot. There wasn't a ton of strikes. Her spare-making ability is why she won today.”

White felt like she was comfortable despite the challenge the lanes presented.

“The amount of oil on the lanes, it was defnitely wetter than we're used to,” White said. “Sometimes you have to change a ball, move closer to the head pin or get more of an angle.”

On the boys' side, no bowlers were able to crack the top 12 to reach states.

Butler's Dan Bellis and Matt Wetzel finished 41st and 42nd, respectively.

Knoch's Joe Zacherl finished 59th.
