Warriors dominant in 1st win

Boben, Marterella shine for Moniteau in 11-0 triumph over Venango Catholic

Jake McBride didn't see the same zip from Venango Catholic's pitchers that Moniteau saw when it opened the season in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

That allowed the Warriors senior third baseman an opportunity to practice one of the many things the trip prepared him for.

Being patient.

Moniteau's batters picked their spots and collected seven hits in the first two innings of a five-inning, 11-0 non-conference baseball win Wednesday night at Kelly Automotive Park.

“It's a big difference from what we saw down in Myrtle,” said McBride, who drove in two runs. “It about polar opposite, but it's still pitching. You have to work through it.”

Moniteau (1-1) jumped on Vikings starting pitcher Zach Balog, chasing him after one inning by plating six runs with two outs.

Venango Catholic's defense didn't help, committing two errors that led to runs.

After Derek Boben and Elijah Stewart reached on errors and Zach Jewart walked, Aaron Marterella buried the Vikings.

He lifted a single to right field that cleared the bases and put the Warriors up 6-0.

“We had to make sure we get the best pitch we could get and be patient,” Marterella said. “Wait on the curveball, stay back and drive the ball.”

Venango Catholic (0-2) used four pitchers and made five errors in the field.

“We have to find some pitching and we were trying things to get there,” Vikings coach Bob Felmlee said. “We knew we were probably going to come down and get a butt whipping, but we wanted to come down and play and see where we were.”

Moniteau also started the second inning strong. Austin Blauser singled and Josh McBride walked.

Jake McBride followed with a single that plated both to put the Warriors ahead 8-0.

Jake McBride and Kaleb Eshenbaugh, who drove in a run in the first inning, scored on passed balls.

Marterella picked up his fourth RBI and second hit when he singled in Jewart to make the score 11-0 with one out in the second.

Boben earned the win for the Warriors. Boben fanned nine batters and allowed three hits in five innings pitched.

Venango Catholic threatened Boben in the fifth inning. After Balog drew a one-out walk, Boben struck out John Hargenrader.

Josh Puleo and Nate Dudzic loaded the bases with infield singles.

Boben got out of danger by striking out Luke Plumer.

Warriors coach Ross Martin declined comment.

The game was played under a light mist of rain for most of the game.

Much like being patient at the plate, that's something else Moniteau learned how to handle in the south.

“A little colder up here,” Marterella said. “It's fine. When we were down in Myrtle Beach, we played in two games when the conditions weren't perfect. It was rainy and wet, there wasn't much of a difference.”
