Fire truck book case rolls in

Patrick Deighan, 3, tries out the new fire truck book case at the Cranberry Public Library Friday. Members of the Cranberry Township Volunteer Fire Company rescued the book case from a storage unit in Allegheny County and delivered it to the library.

CRANBERRY TWP — The children's section of the Cranberry Public Library got a special delivery Friday morning, and it took all of 10 seconds for the children to start playing on it.

The Cranberry Township Volunteer Fire Company delivered a book case decorated in the form of a fire truck, a book case that had been in storage at an elementary school in Allegheny County for several years.

Jack Carney, a retired firefighter, found out about the book case, which is 17 years old, and saved it from the storage room.

“You know what happens to things that go into storage,” Carney said. “They never come out again, and if they do, it's because it's getting junked.”

The firefighters also stocked the book case with fire safety-related books written for younger readers.

After the men hauled the book case in to its new home, it literally took about 10 seconds before a pack of children began climbing on it and playing with it.

The book case, which was originally in an elementary school in Robinson Township, will be outfitted with the logo of Cranberry's fire company.

Leslie Pallotta, library director, said she welcomed the delivery.

“It's pretty cool when we get to work with other community organizations,” she said. “We help them and they help us. It's a great arrangement.”

The firefighters had to cut about four inches off the book case to fit it into the library.
