Scholarship contest kicks off anniversary in Zelie

Essays accepted for $500 awards

ZELIENOPLE — While plans are under way for nearly a week of events for late May to celebrate the borough’s 175th anniversary, a scholarship contest for the anniversary is already under way.

The committee that is planning the celebration is accepting essays for two $500 scholarships, one for a male and one for a female student.

The $1,000 total is being donated by One Enchanted Evening bridal shop, owner Linda Scolieri said.

The anniversary committee originally considered having a beauty pageant, but changed to a scholarship that will offer equal opportunity to male and female students, Scolieri said.

Applicants must be Zelienople residents between the ages of 16 and 22 years old who are attending or plan to attend a college or technical school.

The essay must be 1,000 words on the topic: “What it means to grow up and live in a small town.”

Additional suggestions for the content of the essay includes: “how a small town environment has shaped the life of the student,” “why growing up in Zelienople has been beneficial in the students’ outlook” and “what changes Zelienople could make to enrich life for younger residents.”

The winning entries will be chosen by May 15.

In addition to the cash prize, the winners will attend a dinner on May 29 and will participate in the parade on May 30.

Scolieri said the winners will be honored at the dinner, and their essays will be displayed for guests to read.

The deadline to apply is April 15. Essays may be submitted via e-mail to jack@visitbutlercounty.com or through the mail to 111 W. New Castle St., Zelienople, Pa., 16063.
