Butler Police

10:17 p.m. Sunday — Royce D. Underwood, 26, of Beaver Falls, Beaver County, was arrested after a domestic dispute in the 300 block of South Chestnut Street. Police found Underwood after a caller reported a man was choking a woman in a car.

Officers got there and saw Underwood in the front passenger seat with his left arm around the throat of the alleged victim, Melissa Riding, who was in the driver’s seat, according to court documents.

Police later noted that Riding was “visibly upset and crying” and that she had a large red mark around the front of her throat.

Underwood was arraigned on a charge of simple assault and placed in the Butler County Prison on $2,500 bail.

7:59 p.m. Thursday — Rickey A. Otto, 46, of Butler was arrested for drunken driving after a suspected hit-and-run crash at West Penn and Mercer streets. Police said Otto was driving a pickup that hit another car driven by James Young.

Otto fled, according to court documents, but Young notified authorities and followed the truck to Otto’s home in the 500 block of Federal Street. Police found Otto there and noticed a “strong smell” of alcohol coming from him, documents said.

He later failed field sobriety tests and admitted, “Yea(h) I’m drunk,” a police affidavit said. He refused to take a breath test.

Otto is charged with driving under the influence and hit-and-run.

Butler Twp Police

Monday — Police charged Gary P. McCarl, 22, of Butler with going into the Family Bowlaway on Fairground Hill Road with a handgun he had in a plastic bag. He faces a felony charge of carrying a firearm without a concealed-carry permit.

McCarl also is charged with reckless endangerment, a misdemeanor, and disorderly conduct, a summary.

Police said after bowling alley employees told McCarl that guns were not allowed on the premises, he took the bag with his 9 mm Ruger pistol in it across the street and laid it against a tree. The bag also contained a magazine clip loaded with 17 rounds.

Officers seized the bag with the gun and ammunition.

Monday — Police charged Betty Lou Smith, 44, of Butler with providing an officer with a bogus name on Feb. 19 after being stopped in the 100 block of Freeport Road. A police report noted that at the time Smith was wanted on a bench warrant.

She is charged with false identification to law enforcement authorities.

12:02 p.m. March 19 — William D. Hays III, 37, of East Butler allegedly shoplifted $76 worth of merchandise from the Walmart at Butler Commons.

Hays, who has three prior shoplifting convictions, all in Westmoreland County, is charged with a felony count of retail theft. He also is charged with driving with a suspended license.

5:05 p.m. Sunday — Rebecca Renfrew, 61, of Butler was hurt in a three-vehicle wreck in the 400 block of Whitestown Road. Renfrew was driving a sport utility vehicle that was stopped in traffic when it was rear-ended by a minivan driven by Christine Rockcastle, 41, of Lyndora.

The collision forced the SUV into the back of a car, driven by Mary Mercurio, 59, of Butler, that also was stopped in traffic. Renfrew was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital with a minor injury.

Police cited Rockcastle for driving at an unsafe speed.

5:39 p.m. Saturday — Lacey Ann Howard, 21, of Butler was caught on store surveillance video returning an appliance valued a $200 that she had not paid for at the Walmart at Butler Commons. Howard is charged with theft by deception.

10 p.m. Friday — A homeless man is wanted on a felony arrest warrant after allegedly threatening a woman with a knife at the Super 8 motel on Route 8 south of Butler.

The suspect, Robert A. Hostinsky, 32, is accused of holding the knife to the victim’s throat and strangling her. Police said he also threatened to kill the woman, who was not seriously injured.

Hostinsky fled the motel in a black, 2015 Mazda 5 convertible with the Virginia license plate VEC4085.

District Judge Kevin O’Donnell issued an arrest warrant for Hostinsky on charges of aggravated assault, terroristic threats and simple assault.

1:31 p.m. Friday — Two out-of-county women were captured after allegedly trying to make off with $51 in merchandise from the Butler Commons’ Walmart.

The suspects — Lacy Howard, 24, of Springdale, Allegheny County, and Jessica Miller, 25, of Greensburg, Westmoreland County — fled the store but were caught nearby at Applebee’s restaurant. Both women are charged with retail theft and disorderly conduct. Howard also is charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.

11:30 a.m. Wednesday — A 16-year-old student allegedly stole a pair of tennis shoes at the Butler Intermediate High School. The suspect, who police did not identify, is charged with theft and receiving stolen property.

11:52 p.m. March 15 — Trenton Lee Stearns, 19, of Slippery Rock was arrested for driving under the influence on New Castle Road.

In addition to DUI, Stearns is charged with DUI by a minor, careless driving, disregarding traffic lanes, disobeying traffic control devices and failing to notify authorities of a change of address.

State Police, Butler

7:46 p.m. Monday — Paul E. Heller Jr., 47, was arrested after an altercation with his 16-year-old stepson at their Byron Center home in Allegheny Township.

Heller allegedly grabbed the boy around the neck and threatened to kill him. Police said Heller was apparently upset that the boy had not cleaned his room. The teen was not hurt.

Heller was placed in the Butler County Prison to await arraignment on charges of terroristic threats and harassment.

7:05 a.m. Monday — Trevor L. Beige, 21, of Fenelton was hurt when a deer jumped on the hood of his car and crashed through the windshield on Clearfield Road in Clearfield Township. He was able to stop the car on the side of the road.

Police said Beige, who was wearing a seat belt, suffered a minor injury that did not require hospital treatment

9:07 a.m. March 21 — A sport utility vehicle driven by Judy L. Kradel, 57, of Butler traveled up the sidewalk curb and struck the side of the building that housed the former Bon Ton store at the Clearview Mall in Center Township. The wreck flattened all four tires.

Police said Kradel fled the scene, leaving the SUV behind. She was later cited for careless driving, reckless driving, hit-and-run and failing to stop and provide information after an accident.

State Police, Franklin

3:52 p.m. Monday — Samantha E. Layman, 27, of Harrisville was hurt when she lost control of her sport utility vehicle and struck an embankment on Melvin Road in Irwin Township. The SUV overturned and ended on its rood.

Layman, who was wearing a seat belt, was taken to the Grove City Medical Center with minor injuries. She was cited for disregarding traffic lanes.

The Clintonville Volunteer Fire Department and Superior Ambulance assisted.

State Police, Kittanning

Sunday — A thief stole several rings, $2 bills, gold coins and currency from a home on Wyant Road in North Buffalo Township. The theft happened between March 20 and Sunday.
