Matz, Raiders win at Shaler

Seneca Valley pitcher Nikki Matz didn’t allow a late rally to shake her.

The Raiders pitcher struck over five over seven innings to help Seneca Valley beat Shaler 4-3 in a Section 3-AAAA Wednesday night on the road game. The Raiders built a 4-0 lead through the first three innings over Shaler (3-1, 3-1).

The Titans scored three runs in the fifth and sixth innings to cut into the lead.

Julia Zezinka hit a two-run homer for the Raiders (2-1, 2-1), while Elayna Nagy had a triple and single.

Freeport 7, Kittanning 3 — Morgan McCarthy went 4-for-4 and Jess Kelley had a triple, two RBI and was the winning pitcher for the Yellowjackets.

Kelley struck out seven in the win.

Julianne Marriotti was 2-for-3 and Kristie Radvan was 2-for-4 for Freeport.

Baseball

Matt Berouin threw five scoreless innings and struck out three to help the Mars baseball team open Section 5-AAA play by blanking Hampton 4-0 on the road.

Berouin had an RBI for the Planets (3-3, 1-0), and Ryan Leshinsky tripled.

Mars senior Ori Rinaman won four events — the 110 hurdles, 100 dash, 200 dash and 300 hurdles — to help the Planets eke by Knoch, 75-74, in a Section 3-AAA meet. Jordan Geist won three events — the shot put, javeline and discus — for the Knights.

Knoch’s girls track team beat Mars 78.5-71.5.

Emily Kroneberg won the shot put and discus for the Knights.

Karns City sweeps — Logan Moroney won the 100 dash (11.1 seconds), 200 dash (22.8) and was a member of the winning 1,600 relay to help Karns City sweep a pair of KSAC meets against Moniteau (94-52) and Clarion (95-42).

Ethan Conto and Tyler Dunn also picked up two wins.

On the girls side, Karns City swept Moniteau (94-55) and Clarion (104-45).

Emily Hegedus won the 100 and the 200 and Abby Wolfe won the 100 and 300 hurdles for the Gremlins.

Maura Kimmel won the shot and discus for Moniteau.
