Clarion quiets Warriors

McBride's 3 hits Moniteau's only offense in 2-1 loss

Josh McBride had Max Lane's number Tuesday afternoon.

The same can't be said for the rest of Moniteau's lineup.

Lane, a senior and Clarion's top pitcher, surrendered just three hits — all singles by McBride — in a 2-1 complete game baseball win over the Warriors at Kelly Automotive Park. The one run he did allow was unearned.

“Max was outstanding today,” said Clarion coach Rob Jewett. “He did exactly what we asked him to do, stayed within himself, kept the ball down and trusted his defense. Moniteau is a great hitting team. (McBride) was his nemesis, but besides him, I thought Max did a good job of controlling the middle of their order.”

McBride's base hits came in the first, third and sixth inning.

“I was seeing the ball well today,” he said. “I made some adjustments before the game, things like weight transfer and just getting ready to drive the ball. We had never faced him (Lane) before and we approached this game as we do any other.”

McBride's one-out single in the sixth was followed by a wild pitch that moved him to second. But moments later, he strayed too far off the bag and was picked off by Lane.

“I was trying to be aggressive,” McBride said. “He just caught me at the right time.”

McBride was also at second base in the third following his single and stolen base. Lane's wild pitch ricocheted off catcher Kyle Patterson and skipped toward the third-base dugout. McBride raced around third and tried to score, but Patterson got to the ball and threw to Lane, who was covering the plate and made the tag for the final out of the inning.

Moniteau (2-2) scored its only run in the bottom of the second when Austin Blauser reached on a throwing error and courtesy runner J.J. Waid came home on another miscue on a ball hit by Derek Boben.

The two errors tainted an otherwise strong defensive showing by the Bobcats, including a 5-4-3 double play in the bottom of the seventh.

“Overall, I liked our defensive effort,” said Jewett. “We had a couple of pick-offs and I liked that double play. We didn't have a true double play all of last year.”

Clarion scored an unearned run in the second inning, then broke a 1-all tie with another unearned tally in the top of the fifth. Spencer Miller singled to left, stole second base and scored on a fielding mishap. It proved to be the game's final and deciding run.

“Our fielding is usually very good,” said McBride. “Our heads just weren't in it today. It's something we have to come back from.”

Both of Clarion's runs were charged to Moniteau starter Zach Jewart, who struck out three and walked five while surrendering five hits. He was pulled after walking Leo Aiello with one out in the sixth.

Jake McBride pitched the rest of the game for the Warriors, including setting the Bobcats (2-0) down in order in the top of the seventh.
