Mars' Doyle nets 100th

Girls lacrosse team stuns unbeaten Shaler, 13-11; Mars, Knoch, Freeport baseball keep winning

Shannon Doyle hit a milestone Wednesday night, scoring six times to become the first Mars girls lacrosse player to score 100 goals.

The Planets, who are in their second year as a program, also got their first signature win with a 13-11 decision over defending WPIAL champion Shaler in a Division II-Section 3 match.

The previously unbeaten Titans (9-1, 6-1) had won their previous four games against Mars, including an 18-7 win in the WPIAL semifinals last season.

Camille Cipkins also scored three goals for Mars (6-5, 6-1).

Baseball

Ryan Leshinsky hit a three-run homer and struck out four batters in three innings pitched to help Mars outlast Highlands 11-9 at home in a Section 1-AAA showdown.

Jake Swiatek homered and doubled twice to drive in three runs for the Planets (5-4, 3-1).

Zarek Simkovich, Ty Reginelli, Anthony Michalski and Cam Marshall also had two hits for Mars.

Emily McDonald and Jen Miller both hit solo home runs for the Golden Tornado (2-4, 2-4). McDonald pitched all 10 innings and struck out five batters.

The Moniteau boys and girls track teams swept Union by scores of 109-40 and 125-24, respectively.

Brendan Stamm won two events for the Warriors, taking the shot put (44-9 1/2) and discus (138-3).

Union's Tyler Wiser hit a district qualifying mark and won the high jump (6-0).

On the girls' side, Gabby Stewart, Maura Kimmel and Megan McKinney each won two events for Moniteau.
