Butler Police

Tuesday — Police charged Nikki Ann Marie Mathews with possession of drug paraphernalia and driving with a suspended license stemming from an April 11 traffic stop at West North and North Chestnut streets. Officers said they found a suspected crack cocaine pipe under the driver’s seat.

Mathews’ passenger, John W. Bittner, 27, of Butler, also was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia for having a marijuana pipe, court documents said.

1:36 p.m. Monday — Tara L. Hockenberry, 22, of Butler allegedly tried to pass a counterfeit $20 bill at the A-Plus convenience store on West Jefferson Street. The store would not accept the bogus bill.

When police caught up to Hockenberry, she claimed she did not know the bill was fake, documents said. She is charged with forgery, a felony.

Monday — Brian M. Payment Jr., 25, of Summit Township was charged with misdemeanor drug possession in connection with a suspicious vehicle and person investigation last month. Police said they stopped Payment after seeing him coming and going in the area of Pillow Street at Ballpark Street.

The suspect was searched and found with two stamp bags and three empty bags of heroin as well as a syringe, according to court documents.

11:54 a.m. Sunday — Matthew J. Daniels, 26, of Butler was arrested on a bench warrant at a home on the 300 block of Walker Avenue. Police also charged him with possession of a controlled substance after he was found with a Suboxone strip for which he did not have a prescription, according to court documents.

Butler Twp Police

10:15 a.m. Monday — Two people suffered minor injuries after a tractor-trailer sideswiped a pickup truck on Route 8 south near the Burger King. In turn, the driver lost control of the pickup and hit two other vehicles.

Police said the crash remains under investigation and the names of the drivers and those injured were not immediately available.

9:55 p.m. Friday — Edward Notaro, 58, rode a law mower from his Rural Drive home to a home in the 200 block of New Castle Road, where he allegedly pushed and threatened to hit a man there. The suspect later took off on the mower.

Police said Notaro was cited for harassment.

4:24 p.m. Thursday — A tractor-trailer driven by John Gruber, 51, of Shippenville, Clarion County, collided with a vehicle driven by Andrew Verostek, 27, of St. Petersburg, Clarion County, when the rig merged from the right to the left lane on Route 422.

Verostek’s vehicle was then struck from behind by a vehicle driven by Ryan Polito, 24, of Freeport.

April 15 — Michael McCoppin, 28, was caught with suspected drug contraband during a warrant search of his apartment at Forest Heights on Route 8 south. He is charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.

Police said they also found Jessica Davis, 29, of Harrisville at the apartment. She allegedly gave officers a bogus name and is charged with false identification to law enforcement authorities.

Grove City Police

Sunday — Police are investigating several recent vehicle break-ins.

An unknown thief or thieves made off with loose change after entering two unlocked vehicles in the 200 block of Garden Avenue. The thefts happened between 10 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. Sunday.

An unknown amount of compact discs were taken from another unlocked vehicle, in the 600 block of Stewart Avenue. That theft occurred between 7 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. Sunday.

In another theft, about $20 was taken from an unlocked vehicle in the 500 block of State Street between 6 p.m. April 15 and 5 a.m. Thursday.

State Police, Butler

Monday — Police charged Travis Jay Bennett, 22, of Butler with stealing thousands of dollars and nine cell phones earlier this year from the Sprint store at Clearview Mall in Center Township where he worked.

Bennett allegedly took $5,334 in currency and sold the stolen cell phones online, according to court documents. The phones are valued at nearly $800. The theft happened between Jan. 24 and March 17.

He is charged with felony counts of theft and receiving stolen property.

Police April 8 arrested Bennett in a separate case at the same store where he is accused of threatening to kill a manager who fired him after the money and phones turned up missing.

Bennett in that case was arraigned on charges of terroristic threats, harassment and disorderly conduct, and placed in Butler County Prison on $15,000 bail.

2:44 a.m. Friday — Dennis E. Brown Jr., 37, of Chicora was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence on Route 68 at O’Donnell’s Beer Distributor in Oakland Township.
