Butler girls track back in playoffs

The Butler girls track team is headed back to the WPIAL Class AAA team playoffs after a three-year absence.

With a sweep of Seneca Valley and North Hills Tuesday at Seneca Valley High School, the Golden Tornado locked up a spot with a 5-1 Section 3-AAA record.

Shana Hoy led the Golden Tornado with first-place finishes in the 400 run and was a member of the winning 1,600 relay team.

Kalynn Callihan and Taylor Weaver picked up wins with career bests in the discus (38 feet, 9 inches) and pole vault (9-6), respectively.

On the boys’ side, the Golden Tornado beat North Hills 119-31 and Seneca Valley 103-47.

Jackson Williams, Robert Burdine, Marcus McCall, Brandon Critchlow, Connor Frost and Jake Anderson were multiple event winners for Butler.

Softball

Seneca Valley held off a late surge by North Hills to win a Section 3-AAAA road matchup 4-3.

Nikki Matz earned the win for the Raiders (9-2, 8-2) by striking out five batters in seven innings of work. Maddie Schultz and Marie Marnik both drove in runs for Seneca Valley.

Karns City 6, Redbank Valley 5 — Brittany Coyle doubled down the left-field line to help the Gremlins earn a walk-off KSAC win over the Bulldogs.

Coyle had four hits for Karns City, which finished with 14 as a team.

Saydie Moore, who had a single and double, scored the winning run for the Gremlins.

Boys Volleyball

Chris Fiorina had a team-high 17 kills as Butler rolled to a 25-21, 27-25, 25-17 sweep of Baldwin.

Nash Bryan also had 15 kills for the Golden Tornado (6-4), while Matt Wetzel handed out 27 assists. Brett Heckathorn also had 12 digs for Butler, which will travel to North Allegheny Thursday.

Club Sports

Terese Goldinger, Cameron Lindsey, Morgan Ruppersberger and Katie Hill all scored two goals for Freeport in a 13-8 girls lacrosse loss to Aquinas Academy.

Cassie Suran made six stops in net for the Yellowjackets.
