Fire hits Cranberry company second time

CRANBERRY TWP — Township firefighters Friday night responded to a roof fire at the Kawneer facility on Progress Avenue.

It was the second minor roof fire at the factory in the past five weeks.

Fire Chief Todd Rice of the Cranberry Volunteer Fire Department said the fire was small, and the fire department put it out in about 30 minutes. About 20 firefighters responded to the scene just after 10 p.m.

Crews were back in service by midnight.

Rice did not have an estimated value of damage to the rubber roof.

The facility has more than 400 employees. Rice said there were workers in the building at the time of the fire.

The fire was several feet away from the section of roof that caught fire March 19.

Rice said the company is investigating both fires.

Kawneer is a subsidiary of Alcoa, which bought the former Traco facility in 2010.

Kawneer is a manufacturer of windows, aluminum frames and other architectural products for the commercial construction industry.
