Wofford comes calling

Mars shortstop Ty Reginelli will continue his academic and baseball career at Wofford University in South Carolina. The Southern Conference school is 28-13 so far this season.

ADAMS TWP — Ty Reginelli knew he could run. The Mars junior baseball player had to prove it to the Wofford University baseball coaching staff before he would be offered a scholarship.

That’s why Reginelli and Planets baseball coach Andy Bednar had to put the final touches on his college recruitment at the Lakeview Athletic Club.

The Terriers, who Reginelli committed to last week, liked everything that the Mars senior shortstop showed them skill-wise during a fall workout.

They were still tentative to make an offer because Reginelli couldn’t sprint in front of them due to a hip injury.

Reginelli had Bednar film him as he did a few sprints three or four weeks later.

They did it until they got enough tape for Wofford, which is a Division I school based in Spartansburg, S.C. The Terriers extended an offer shortly after.

“There were definitely some cuts,” Reginelli joked about the video. “After doing five sprints, I was done for the day.”

Reginelli leads the Planets, who are 6-5, with 12 RBIs and has a .433 batting average.

Last season, he hit over .500.

“He’s just a guy who gets quality at-bats,” Bednar said. “We’ve put him in position with runners in scoring position to drive in runs for us.”

Before his junior season, Reginelli worked on getting his swing in order. He put a major focus on mechanics.

“That’s where I locked up my swing,” Reginelli said. “I worked on repetition, so everything became second nature to me.”

Building that base allowed him to make smaller tweaks and adjustments this offseason.

That’s helped him work on squaring up the ball better.

“I’ve been trying to keep my front foot flatter so I can get my hands through the zone quicker,” Reginelli said.

Wofford competes in the Southern Conference and has a 28-13 record this season.

Reginelli was a little anxious about finding a place to play before Bednar helped put him in touch with the Terriers.

Bednar’s son, Dave, who pitches for Lafayette College, was recruited by Wofford. It was on Bednar’s advice that the Terriers decided to take a look at Reginelli.

What stands out about Reginelli to Bednar is his throwing ability.

“I think his arm is really at a Division I level. He’s been at a number of showcases and can throw 90 miles per hour across the infield,” Bednar said. “That’s an eye-opener for any college.”

Reginelli went down for a showcase in South Carolina and ended up liking a college he hadn’t put too much thought into.

He’s undecided about what he’d like to study.

“I’ve heard of them,” said Reginelli, who didn’t follow the program. “The more I looked at it, the more I liked it. It’s a small school and I like the campus.”

Now that Reginelli has his college decision out of the way, he wants to help the Planets win a WPIAL playoff game.

Mars hasn’t won a playoff game since it beat Monaca 11-0 in 1998.

“I just want a playoff win,” Reginelli said. “I know the guys, we’ve worked hard throughout the years. People thought this senior class is weak, but we want to prove we can win.”
