City to begin taking garage bids

Estimated cost of project tops $4M

The city will begin seeking bids next week for its new parking garage.

Mayor Tom Donaldson said Gateway Engineers, which is handling the preliminary engineering of the structure, expects to first advertise requests for bids on Wednesday.

Joe Gray of Gateway said prebid documents will be available for prospective bidders the first week of May. Those documents will include drawings and specifications.

Gray said the anticipated due date for bids is June 5.

He said the city must select contractors to handle mechanical, electrical, plumbing and general contracting duties.

The city is looking to build a 239-space garage as part of the Centre City project, which also includes a proposed Marriott Springhill Suites hotel and the already-completed Rite Aid pharmacy.

The garage will have four tiers and two stairwell towers and now is expected to have an elevator.

Gray said the elevator is in the plans, but it is being bid as an alternate piece.

“That way we know exactly how much it’ll add to the total cost,” he said.

The city originally planned not to have an elevator, but reconsidered it following concerns from residents, Donaldson said.

The proposals will undergo an extensive review before a selection is made.

“It could take a little while,” Gray said.

No groundbreaking date has been set, but Donaldson hopes work can begin in July. The estimated cost of the garage is more than $4 million.
