Bercury winner at The Meadows

WASHINGTON, Pa. — Daylon Miracle, a 6-year-old mare owned by Bill Bercury of Slippery Rock, won the Meadows Maturity race Friday night at The Meadowlands.

The horse’s odds were only 5-to-1 entering the nine-horse race for mare trotters 4 years or older. The Meadows Maturity carrying a purse of $51,500. The race kicked off the Grand Circuit, a series of high-purse races throughout the country.

Daylon Miracle was driven by Aaron Merriman, who recorded his 7,000th career win earlier this year. Bercury’s other entrant in the field, Anaffairtoremember, finished third.

Bercury referred to the race as “the biggest win of my career.”

Cowgirl Hall finished second while prohibitive 7-to-5 favorite Shake It Cerry, driven by harness racing all-time wins leader Dave Pallone, placed fourth after leading for much of the race before fading down the stretch.

Shake It Cerry was bidding for her 10th consecutive victory.

“We beat the two best mares in the country from last year,” Bercury said after the race. “I’m very excited about that. I had a lot of confidence in both my mares. They both have a lot of heart.

“They both really love racing, and that means so much. I love them.”

Daylon Miracle earned more than $165,000 in winnings last year and routinely faces — and defeats — male rivals.

Bercury is taking both Daylon Miracle and Anaffairtoremember to this Sunday’s stake at Miami Valley, another Grand Circuit stop.

“Next week will be a little tougher. At least now we feel we belong there,” Bercury said.
