Hitting's contagious for Knoch

Knights explode for 19 hits in 8th straight win

FREEPORT — Two outs, nobody on, the No. 9 hitter coming to the plate.

No problem, right?

Guess again.

Knoch strung together seven consecutive hits in such a situation in the second inning Monday at Freeport Boro Field, had 12 straight batters reach base and scored nine runs.

The onslaught paved the way for a 15-4 Section 5-AAA baseball win over Freeport, the Knights' eighth win in a row.

“Hitting is contagious,” senior shortstop Chris Law said. “When everyone's getting in on it like that, it is so much fun.”

While the game lasted only five innings, Knoch (11-1, 8-1) banged out 19 hits and stranded 12 runners — leaving the bases loaded twice — despite scoring 15 times.

Every player in the Knights' lineup had at least one hit and scored at least one run. Eight different players had at least one RBI.

“These guys were locked in today and really hit the ball,” Knoch coach George Bradley said. “All we can control is the game we're playing that day and that's the attitude they're taking.”

The air was cold, the wind didn't help — and Knoch didn't care.

“Our goal is to win a WPIAL championship,” Law said. “To do that, we have to be ready to play every day, anywhere, no matter the conditions.”

The Knights protected their lead atop the section. They took a 1-0 lead into the top of the second against Freeport ace left-hander Nate Pastorek, who promptly retired the first two batters.

No. 9 hitter and winning pitcher Alex Stobert doubled to left, scoring on Dom Bucko's single to right field. Law followed with a towering homer to right and the avalanche of hits continued.

Cole Shinsky, Jordan Kowalski, Asa Adams and Garrett Traggai produced singles and 15 batters wound up coming to the plate in the frame.

Two infield errors and a walk contributed to the damage. The Yellowjackets (4-6, 3-5) committed six errors on the day.

“We can certainly play better than we did today and we're going to have to,” Freeport coach Chris Graczyk said, his team trying to reach the WPIAL playoffs. “We just made too many mistakes.

“Knoch has a good team. They can hit the ball. You have to take the outs when you get them and we didn't do that.”

Pastorek did not get out of the second inning. Freeport used three pitchers in the contest.

“Nate throws strikes and gets a lot of ground balls. But we didn't field them today,” Graczyk said.

Freeport lost center fielder Kris Keppel to an injury in the first inning after he and left fielder Derek Jones collided while chasing a fly ball that Jones caught.

Knoch scored four runs after two were out and no one on base in the fourth inning as well. Adams' two-run single highlighted that frame.

“You always want to do one of three things when you're at the plate, depending on the situation,” Bradley said. “Get on base, move a runner over or drive home a run.

“I like the approach our hitters are taking.”

Stobert allowed three hits in a route-going effort on the mound. He threw 40 of his 58 pitches for strikes and threw only 22 total pitches in the final three innings.
