KANE — Logan Moroney didn’t mind having some company atop the medal stand.

On a day when he won the boys’ 200-meter dash outright and contributed to a relay title, it was Moroney’s ability to tie Clarion’s Ian Corbett for first place in the 100 dash that proved most gratifying to the Karns City senior.

Corbett entered Friday’s District 9 Class AA Track and Field Title Meet at Kane High School as the two-time defending champion in the event. He edged Moroney by .35 seconds for the title last year.

This time, Corbett held a slim lead as he neared the finish line.

“There was about 20 meters left and I made my move,” said Moroney. “The only question was, could I catch him?”

Both runners finished the event in 11.06 seconds and later stood back-to-back on the top of the awards podium.

“I’m more satisfied with tying Corbett than with the other events,” Moroney said. “He is so good in the 100 and my goal was to at least be even with him.”

Later in the day, Moroney defended his title in the 200 with a finish of 22.56. He also teamed with Tristan Rhoades, Tyler Dunn and Alessandro Marotto to win the 4x100 relay.

“We came in two seconds faster than anybody,” said Karns City coach Don Black of the relay. “We expected to win. Dropping the baton was the only thing that could have prevented it.”

The Gremlins closed the meet by claiming victory in the 4x400 relay. Rhoades, Collin Dunmyre, Colton Hawk and Chandler Turner turned in a time of 3:31.79.

Dugan Gallagher’s sport of choice is football, but Union’s junior proved to be very capable on the track as well.

Just weeks after running the 400 for the first time, Gallagher walked away with a district championship.

“I joined the track team to get conditioning for football,” he said, “but placing at districts is pretty nice, too.”

And winning is even better, especially after entering the meet seeded sixth.

Moving up the ranks has become a trend for Gallagher. He entered the recent Redbank Valley Invitational seeded 13th in the 400, but placed third.

“Seeding messes people up,” Gallagher said. “Their heads get too big. I just wanted to run my best. It seems the bigger the meet, the faster I run.”

Also rising to the occasion was Moniteau’s Gabby Stewart, who ran a time of 26.7 to win the girls’ 200.

“I wanted to break my personal record of 26.5,” said Stewart, who finished 11th in the event last year as a freshman. “But I’m glad I am going to states. I can get it there.”

Rain fell for much of the meet, but let up during the 200.

“I ran in the rain during the 4x100 and I was fine,” Stewart said. “I just have to stay loose.”
