Group buys ice rink

BladeRunners becomes Baierl Ice Complex

WARRENDALE, Allegheny County — BladeRunners has been sold and is now the Baierl Ice Complex, according to one of the men who bought the property.

Chris Parry of Cranberry Township is a partner in Next Step Hockey, a company that focuses on player development that bought the Warrendale ice complex.

Parry, who wouldn’t disclose the sale price other than to say it was for market value, said his investor group plans on building an in-line skating rink at the complex as well as adding other amenities.

Crews are working inside the Warrendale facility to “spruce it up,” Parry said, which includes painting, new signs and other renovations.

Parry also said that Next Step Hockey plans to host summer camps, instructional camps and other attractions that will focus on player development.

Parry, whose son will soon start playing hockey for Kent State University, has been involved in youth hockey in Pittsburgh for the past decade.

“We’re obviously really excited for the transition,” Parry said. “The bottom line is that it’s a great facility.”

Parry added that Next Step Hockey will soon be accredited and certified by the USA Hockey organization, and it will soon develop in-house leagues in addition to “elite player development.”

The ice complex in Warrendale opened in 1994 and has since become the home ice for clubs such as Mars, Seneca Valley and Ambridge high schools.

The facility also hosts Slippery Rock University’s men’s and women’s collegiate hockey clubs.

According to a statistic on the facility’s website, the ice complex has more than 400,000 people annually for hockey games, tournaments, figure skating and birthdays.
