State Police, New Castle

Thursday — Herbert H. Gruntz Jr., 68, of Plain-Grove Township, Lawrence County, told police people stole $399 from him in a scam.

Police said the suspects, who identified themselves as representatives of Publishers Clearing House, contacted Gruntz and told him that he won $1.6 million and a new Land Rover SUV. The thieves had him pay the $399 through PayPal for processing fees. They then attempted to have Gruntz pay an additional $1,000, at which time he became suspicious.

When Gruntz refused to send additional money, the suspects told him there was a bomb inside the door to his house and in his oven.

No bombs were found, police said. The investigation continues.
