Butler Twp plant owned by company attacked by terrorist

BUTLER TWP — A township plant is owned by an international company that had an employee killed Friday in a terrorist attack in France.

A truck driver once under surveillance for radical Islamic ties crashed into a chemical warehouse in southeastern France owned by Air Products and Chemicals and hung his employer’s severed head on a factory gate, along with banners with Arabic inscriptions.

The attack, which triggered an explosion that wounded two people, came on a day of violence that spanned three continents.

The gas factory belongs to Air Products, an American chemical company based in Allentown, Pa., and owned by Seifi Ghasemi, an Iranian immigrant.

There is an Air Products plant at 300 Schaffner Road in Butler Township that produces hydrogen transfills, according to the company’s website.

It is one of more than 40 locations across North America.

An employee at the Butler Township plant said Saturday morning that any information would have to come from the company’s corporate office. No one from that office responded to a call Saturday.

Air Products makes gases used by a wide range of industries, including food production, medicine and the oil and gas industry.

It has more than 20,000 employees in 50 countries.
