Deer roam Armstrong office

Animals run into building after back door left open

A mock deer crossing sign has been posted on the door to a storage room in the Armstrong office building on South McKean Street in Butler.

Employees there joked it was a necessary warning after a pair of doe ran into the building last month.

Ron Miller, a repair technician of the company, said a back door leading to Vogely Street was left open as employees carried equipment into a storage room in the back of the building.

As the workers were inside, two deer came walking down the narrow brick street, Miller said.

“A car was coming up the alley at that time and blew his horn at them, and they came straight through the door,” Miller said.

The driver of the car got out and shouted inside the building to warn the workers of the visitors.

“We thought he was joking at first,” Miller said.

The startled deer bolted down a narrow hallway into a storage room.

“Fortunately, they didn’t run up the stairs and into the main office,” Miller said.

The employees were able to chase the deer out of the building where a small crowd had gathered to see what was going on.

“One ran up into Diamond Park,” Miller said. “But someone screamed and the other circled around and came right back in.”

Miller said he was against the wall of the narrow hallway when the deer re-entered the building.

“It ran right past me,” he said.

The scared deer stood in the back of the room. Miller said he tossed a water bottle at it to get it to move before he made his way around shelves in the room to get behind the deer.

“I hit it on the back and got it back out the door,” he said, adding it then fled.

The incident lasted about 10 minutes and Miller said only some packing equipment in the storage room was damaged.

“But I certainly hope it’s the last time that happens,” he said.

Another sign posted on the back door telling employees to keep it closed should help keep away other unwanted visitors.
