Arrest made in ballpark

A suspected shoplifter accused of stealing a drug test kit struck out Wednesday after he broke into a ballpark in a failed getaway bid, Butler police said.

A canine officer helped sniff out the suspect, Bradley S. Cramer, 26, of Butler, who was hiding in the concession area at Kelly Automotive Park.

The arrest turned out to be a double play because city police already had a warrant for him in another case.

Cramer was later arraigned on charges in both cases, and he remains in the Butler County Prison on $15,000 bail

Police about 12:10 p.m. were called to the Kmart store at the Pullman Square shopping center for a reported shoplifting. The thief fled after taking a $30 drug test kit and a can of Old Spice shaving cream, police said.

While headed to the store, officers spotted him running toward the nearby ballpark. Police said Cramer was able to get inside even though the park was closed.

Police nabbed him a short time later. During his attempted getaway, he apparently shed some of the clothes he wore when he was in the store.

Employees at DuBrook, a cement plant next to the park, found Cramer's discarded shirt and bandanna and the stolen can of shaving cream, which they turned over to officers.

Police said Cramer admitted taking the drug test kit, which he had hidden in one of his boots.

Already with two prior shoplifting convictions, he was arraigned on a felony count of retail theft as well as trespass, also a felony.

Additionally, Cramer was arraigned on charges stemming from the arrest warrant filed in an unrelated criminal case in May. Police charged Cramer in that case with misdemeanor trespass and summary criminal mischief

Preliminary hearings in both cases are set for 9:15 a.m. Monday.
