Historic hiking trail closed

Frequent visitors of the Historic Harmony hiking trail will have to find another trail to walk on for now.

Signs placed by JTC1422 Associates on Mercer Street and Wise Road say the trail is “closed until further notice. No trespassing.”

Property owner Don Rodgers is filling in his property with dirt beside the trail.

“The trail is out of order,” Rodgers said. “I have to close it for their (people’s) safety.”

The trail, part of the historic Washington’s Trail, runs through Rodgers’ property. Rodgers has an easement agreement with the borough that allows people to use the trail.

“With the agreement, he can’t close the property forever,” borough solicitor Matt Racunas said. “At some point, he’ll have to open it back up again.”

Harmony borough council President Greg Such said council is trying to work to get it back open.

Mayor Cathy Rape said she is happy that Rodgers is using safety precautions for the trail and that he’s allowing the borough to use the trail for the Fourth of July fireworks celebration.

Rodgers said the construction should be done by Aug. 10.

When the trail will be opened again is not known at this time.
