Husband, wife accused of fraud

ADAMS TWP — A former Butler County real estate agent and his wife are being investigated for bankruptcy fraud after they allegedly bought a home in Florida using assets they hid from bankruptcy court.

The U.S. Attorneys Office in February filed a complaint against Gregory and Maria Makozy, accusing them of bankruptcy fraud and money laundering. The office Thursday filed a motion for forfeiture on a Port St. Lucie home that prosecutors said the couple bought for $350,000 using money concealed from bankruptcy proceedings.

Gregory Makozy, the previous owner of A1 Mortgage in Cranberry Township, filed for bankruptcy in April 2013 — listing $1,321 in total assets at the time of the filing.

However, prosecutors said Makozy initiated a series of transactions with the intent to hide his assets within a year of that filing, including the June 2012 sale of his $1 million Blackstone Ridge Drive home in Adams Township that netted him more than $505,000 after costs and liens. Makozy on the day of the sale wired the money to the newly-created Makozy Real Estate corporate bank account in Florida and withdrew the money in cash a week later, according to court documents.

Makozy also transferred a $54,000 Aston Martin vehicle to his wife, which was sold in 2014. Neither transaction was disclosed during his bankruptcy schedules.

In January 2013, Maria Makozy, using her maiden name of Maria Salvati, allegedly used the money from the sale of the Butler County property to buy a home in Port St. Lucie for $350,000, according to court documents.

Maria Makozy filed for bankruptcy in April 2010, listing $500 in assets — $400 in a bank account and $100 worth of clothes.

Prosecutors said based on that filing, she would have had no source of income that would allow her to purchase the $350,000 parcel in Florida.
