Decriminalize cocaine

San Francisco Chronicle columnist Debra Saunders is right to draw attention to the absurd prison sentencing disparity that exists between powder cocaine and crack possession. I'm referring to her column of March 24, "Cocaine sentences lack logical reasoning."

While Congress deserves praise for trying to remedy this situation, it should not be an end in itself, but a means toward considering decriminalization of these substances.

People possess the right to liberty and should not be imprisoned for exercising their right to their own body, no matter how irrational the decision.

The "War on Drugs" has done nothing but embolden organized crime, abet violence, and squander law enforcement resources.
