New York man charged with ID theft
A New York man is accused of using a fake passport to withdraw thousands of dollars at several Nextier Bank locations, according to Butler Township police.
Glen K. Vargas, 51, of New York City, was charged Tuesday, Jan. 9, with felonies theft, identity theft, and forgery and misdemeanors false identification and drug possession after a bank employee reported one of his attempts to authorities.
According to court documents, police were dispatched Monday to the Nextier Bank location in Moraine Point Plaza for reports of a man attempting to withdraw from an account employees believed was not his. Police later identified the man as Vargas.
A bank employee told officers Vargas approached the teller’s station and identified himself with a passport ID card. The ID displayed a false name, and police said Vargas asked to see the bank statement and fill out a withdrawal slip for the account.
Vargas signed a withdrawal slip for $4,000 using the assumed name, police said. Documents showed the teller knew Vargas had withdrawn $4,000 from a Nextier location in Evans City earlier that day.
Police said Vargas identified himself using the false name on the passport card. Officers were able to identify Vargas using fingerprints, documents showed.
In addition to the fake passport, police said Vargas was found in possession of a marijuana blunt and needles.
Vargas was placed in Butler County Prison in lieu of $250,000. His preliminary hearing before District Judge Kevin O’Donnell is scheduled Jan. 18.
