4 SRU athletes honored by PSAC
SLIPPERY ROCK — Four Slippery Rock University athletes — including three in track and field — have received PSAC West weekly awards.
Sophomore sprinter Kanye Thompson is Men’s Track Athlete of trhe Week after running the fastest 100-meter time by any PSAC male athlete in more than 15 years, winning at the Ashland Alumni Open in 10.32 seconds,. That time is likely third-fastest in PSAC history. Mars graduate Brad Mueller owns the SRU record of 10.29 seconds (2008).
Senior sprinter Samantha Gilbert was named Women’s Track Athlete of the Week. She broke two records at the Ashland Alumni Open, running a leg of The Rock’s 4x100 meter relay that broke the PSAC record with a time of 46.28 seconds, Gilbert also ran the fastest 100-meter time in SRU women’s history at 11.71 seconds.
Senior shot putter Sarah Corrie was named Women’s Field Athlete of the Week, topping her career-best mark in the event at 48 feet, 5.25 inches at the Ashland Alumni Open. That mark is more than three feet better than the No. 2 mark in the PSAC this season.
Senior goalkeeper Gillian O’Rourke was named Women’s Lacrosse Defensive Athlete of the Week, allowing just nine total goals in two SRU wins that locked up the program’s third-ever PSAC playoff berth. She made 14 saves against Indiana in a 14-5 win.
SRU softball player named All-PSAC West
SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University softball junior pitcher Alexsa Hurd has been named second team All-PSAC West.
Now a three-time All-PSAC West selection as utility-pitcher, Hurd is the first Rock softball player to achieve that feat since Butler graduate Jenna Geibel earned all-conference honors four years in a row (2010-13).
Hurd hit .310 with 10 doubles and 10 homers this season. She was 10-10 with one save as a pitcher, leading the team with a 2.73 earned run average.
